Why moms make the best nurses
September 9, 2011
Are you a mom looking to start a career as a nurse? Or maybe you have a mother you've always thought should make a living by caring for others? Perhaps you've just wondered why moms make wonderful nurses.

Mothers can use their natural care-taking skills and maternal instincts to treat and comfort patients in need. When you were a sick kid crying for help, there was no better nurse than Mom. She knew just how to get the fever down, stop your aches and cheer you up.

Motherhood is the best addition to any nursing degree. Real life experience is far more valuable than any schooling. If you've ever had a long stay in the hospital, you know that the best nurses are the ones with that maternal flare that make you feel safe and cared for.

Flexible schedule
In addition to their natural aptitude for nursing, patient care is an excellent career for working mothers because the schedule is flexible. When their little ones are off at school, they can take off to attend to others in need.

Nurses can often make a schedule that fits into their busy lives. Instead of working five days a week, you can still work full-time by working 12-hour shifts. There are several part-time nursing jobs available, or even per diem work, which is excellent for the stay-at-home mom who just wants to pick up a few shifts here and there.

Women with school-aged children may be looking for mother's hours, and for that, there's no better job than a school nurse's. This eliminates the need for any babysitters and allows moms to take the summers off!

Great salary
Moms looking for an enjoyable career with a great salary should definitely consider nursing. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average national wage for nurses as of May 2010 is about $32.50 an hour, or $67,720 a year. The average salary in major metropolitan areas is often much higher. For example, the mean yearly salary for nurses in Boston, Massachusetts, is $92,600.

Between the flexible schedule and great salary, nursing is a great career choice, especially for a mom. It's one of the few careers in which a mother can support her family financially and be there for them when they need her.
